Deserve

Since my teens, when I began examining intentions and consequences of my existence, I have despised the word Deserve. 'You deserve so much better than that' or 'He deserves to die a long, slow death' ... no no no no no. This implies a cosmic reason and fairness. Does anyone really deserve what happens to them, especially if a situation is out of their control?
